Breaking through almost 30 years of civil war and through the country’s natural geographic and cultural isolation, which prevents marginalized groups from receiving fundamental information, Equal Access Afghanistan provides essential education and tools to help millions of Afghanis improve their quality of life. Based in Kabul since 2002, our programs have changed people’s attitudes and behaviors in areas that are critical to the development of Afghanistan such as human rights and women's issues, Islamic education, health and hygiene, drug demand reduction, elections and civic participation, rule of law and peace building. With the national illiteracy rate stretching to over 70%, innovative media - like locally produced radio programs and street theater - is one of the most effective ways to educate and engage people across all of Afghanistan. Equal Access Afghanistan uses a range of tools to achieve change such as community mobilization training, radio dramas, mobile live theatre, round table discussions, media training, TV documentaries, TV drama’s and remote learning through radio. A focus on grass roots engagement and community participation underpins all these programs. In 2007, Equal Access reached nearly 6 million listeners, and expanded to reach almost 10 million in 2008. Equal Access radio programs are broadcast on 37 local FM stations based in central and remote provinces of Afghanistan. In addition Equal Access radio programs are broadcast on a national FM network out of Kabul, and Equal Access television programs are broadcast to a national audience. By speaking directly to peoples' experiences, in a culturally sensitive manner, Equal Access provides real life examples and role modeling that enables people to improve their lives and communities.
