Youth practice traditional call and response banter on radio to provide vital education to their peers

With a population of approximately 5.5 million, the mountainous landlocked country of Laos struggles with widespread health problems including Malaria, TB and HIV/AIDS. Laos’s poor infrastructure makes it difficult to reach the population with critical information, with 35% lacking access to any form of mass media. The adult literacy rate of 65.5% drops to 54.4% for females.

Equal Access is bringing together agencies and NGOs working to disseminate less restrictive and more relevant and authentic information through radio broadcast. Equal Access has begun replicating its successful Nepalese youth radio program, Chatting with My Best Friend, already reaching 30,000 young people in Laos with critical life skills.
