Empowering Cambodia's Next Generation
The first youth-focused social radio program of its kind to be broadcast nationwide in Cambodia, the We Can Do It Khmer-language radio program is built upon lessons learned from Equal Access Nepal’s successful Chatting With My Best Friend youth radio program. Both the Nepalese and Cambodian radio shows are produced by young people for young people, addressing the real issues they face daily. The program is focused on youth life skills, civic participation, community development, financial literacy, health, education, and other issues. Equal Access is currently in its third full year of broadcasting, with support from UNICEF and other donors. According to an audience survey conducted in December 2008, the program is heard by approximately 1.25 million young Cambodians. The program has generated a tremendously positive response among Cambodian youth, as evidenced by the creation of hundreds of listening and dialogue groups – We Can Do It clubs -- formed by enthusiastic listeners in communities around the country. Thousands of youth listening group members meet regularly to discuss program topics and generate feedback to Equal Access content producers. The initial series of 65 programs were produced with support from the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Democracy, Rights and Labor and UNICEF. Additional funding has been received by Wing, a mobile money transfer service affiliated with Australia and New Zealand Banking Group Limited.
