African SahelEmpowering Young People with Lifeskills and Livelihoods Training
Launching two new country programs in Chad and Niger in 2008, Equal Access is developing innovative youth radio programming to provide young people across the Sahel region with life-skills and increased livelihood opportunities. This initiative is also designed to increase overall access to information and improve community governance. Focusing on urban, informal settlements and rural areas underserved by economic and social empowerment initiatives, Equal Access will implement its proven youth media model specifically tailored to the context of the Sahel region of Africa. Our innovative youth to youth radio model spurs dialogue on topics relevant to local communities, plays a role in influencing social norms, forges connections between communities, and inspires positive action. As weak governments, unemployed youth, poverty, ethnic tensions, and lack of access to resources increases within the Sahel region, so does vulnerability to conflict. This new initiative is designed to promote the critical elements of long-term stability in the region: tolerance, peace and economic sustainability.
