Equal Access Programs in Afghanistan

Equal Access Afghanistan develops and implements media communication initiatives on a broad range of critical social development issues aimed at educating and raising awareness and creating positive behavior changes at the individual and community level. Our multi-sector programming includes, but is not limited to, human rights, women's issues, Islamic education, health and hygiene, drug demand reduction, and civic participation. Through our radio-based 'voices from the field', rural and under-served Afghans participate in producing content that responds to their needs. In 2007, Equal Access reached nearly 6 million listeners with 227 hours of original social development content.

Based in Kabul since 2002, Equal Access produces its radio and video programs in our in-house studios. Radio programs are broadcast on national FM stations in provinces throughout the country through our FM partnership network of 18 provincial-based independent stations, as well as on our satellite radio channel Radio Danesh (Knowledge is Light) which transmits the programs to community radio stations for re-broadcast and to several thousand satellite radio receivers housed within community groups. Our video programs are televised to a national audience as well as more targeted beneficiary groups.

By speaking directly to peoples' experiences, in a culturally sensitive manner, our radio projects and vibrant multi-sectoral trainings in Afghanistan provide viable examples and role models for people to emulate, building their capacity to improve their lives and be effective leaders in their communities. Our programming portfolio includes the following current and recent projects:

Current Programs
Human Rights in the Context of Islam and Afghanistan

Teacher Training Initiative
Afghanistan Rural Family Health project
Rural Community Development Initiative: in support of Community Development Councils participating in the National Solidarity Program (NSP)

Equal Access Afghanistan works with local community-based organizations, national and international NGOs, bilateral donors, private foundations and UN agencies.
