From Conflict to Peace Park

The Peace Park. The building at the top of the peak is a newly-constructed Peace Resource Center.

There is a peak on the way to Sankhuwashaba and Dhankuta where Naya Nepal listeners are constructing a peace park. They are building a peace resource center at the top of the peak where news about Nepal’s peace process will shared and where there will be one temple for Shiva and another for Buddha. Although the park is not finished, parents and children play on the slope of the hill that leads to the village and travelers to Khandabri or Bhojpur rest and take in the view.

Devendra Shreshtha, chair of construction committee of the park, says that the peak was a Maoist bunker during the insurgency that villagers stayed away from. Now, villagers want to forget the fighting that went on there. A group of friends and Naya Nepal listeners thought a peace park would heal the community and help future generations live in peace. Two Community Forest User Groups applied to Naya Nepal and were jointly awarded 370 dollars to begin. After this seed funding, listener group members were inspired to finish their project and received further support from other Naya Nepal listening groups and their Village and District Development Committees. After finishing basic construction, they are planning on planting trees and grasses to make the area green and lush.
