When friends Padma and Drupati joined aKamka Kura listening club together, they never imagined that it would lead to starting a business. They quickly learned the value of the program. “We did not need to already be well-educated to listen” says Drupati. “Kamka Kura gives us information about starting a small business and even tells stories about women like us which is encouraging.” One day, the radio show said they would support small business proposals with seed money. Excited by the possibility of earning their own living, their listener group decided upon goat herding and submitted a proposal which was selected by Equal Access. The women were given 5 thousand Nepali rupees (70 USD) to buy two goats. Now, Drupati and Padma and their group are happily raising their goats. Drupati has started saving, having learned from Kamka Kura about how much of a difference even small savings can make. She has a reason to save: “I hope one way it will give birth and I may have my own goat.”
