Strategic Approach

Strategic Uses of Technology

Our mission is focused on integrating Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) in support of development objectives. To do this, Equal Access utilizes appropriate technology solutions. By 'appropriate', we mean technologies that are suited to both the infrastructure constraints, and the cultural strengths of the communities being served.

Our technology solutions, and their implementation in projects, are informed by the following guidelines:

  • Technology as a means, not an end: Information and communications technology is merely a conduit to allow vital education and information to be provided to underserved communities. It is a means to deliver universal basic education, health information and literacy.
  • Appropriate to Community Needs: Technology used should be appropriate to the real needs of those being served. In many cases providing information through audio media will be the most effective means of dissemination.
  • Local Ownership: Local requirements and values regarding education and communication should be assessed and respected. The program should be operated by local groups; with skills and equipment transferred to the local level. At every stage of project design there should be comprehensive involvement by local partners.
  • Cost-effective: Ongoing technical or service costs should be within the capacity of the communities or their governments to pay for and maintain, thereby ensuring financial sustainability.
  • Sustainable: Technology should assist local organizations and programs to do their work more effectively. By doing this, communities, organizations and governments will recognize the value of the system and maintain it after initial project funding expires as it helps them do their work more effectively.
  • Scalable: We utilize ICT solutions that are uniquely suited to being scalable. Scale is achieved because a vast number of potential people can be served by the system, with very low incremental cost of adding to the audience of users.
