Binita Shrestha is an expert in program design, implementation and evaluation with a history of leading programs in politically sensitive environments for over a decade.

Binita Shrestha is an international development practitioner and the Country Director for EAl Nepal. She joined EAl in 2004. She led a multi-award winning communication initiative for HIV prevention and sexual reproductive health and rights – Saathi Sanga Manka Kura “Chatting with My Best Friend,” which features discussions with young people in Nepal designed to inform, empower and inspire them, and impart life skills. Chatting with My Best Friend is in its 17th year with more than 7 million loyal listeners.

She is an expert at implementing mass media campaigns, social behavior change communications (SBCC) interventions, and promoting cross-cultural collaborations among diverse stakeholders, including government, civil society, donors, and the private sector.

Shrestha moved from Nepal to Yemen in 2011 to be EAI’s Country Director where she led the organization’s efforts to engage youth in governance and peacebuilding efforts, including using media to disseminate culturally-resonant information on adolescent reproductive and sexual health.

Shrestha returned to Nepal in 2015, where she is currently leading a multi-component SBCC intervention involving media and community mobilization, the ‘Change Starts at Home’ (Change) initiative targeting married couples. The Change initiative is a part of DFID’s flagship global program, ‘What Works to Prevent Violence Against Women and Girls’ and is designed to prevent intimate partner violence (IPV) by shifting attitudes, norms and behaviors that perpetuate the oppression of women and girls’ connected to IPV in Nepal. She is currently leading the implementation of a Randomized Controlled Trial (RCT) to assess the impact of the Change intervention and spearheading a national mass media campaign for UN Women, with other partners, to advocate for women’s economic empowerment.
