EAI aims to strengthen indigenous capacities of local organizations to build resilience to violent extremism and counter the ideologies and recruitment efforts of armed groups in Mindanao.

According to a 2017 PEW research poll, 70% of Philippines residents say ISIS is the country’s primary threat. To address this, EAI aims to strengthen indigenous capacities of local organizations to build resilience to violent extremism and counter the ideologies and recruitment efforts of armed groups in Mindanao. This US State Department-funded project builds on EAI’s successful CVE messaging hub model which is also being implemented in Northern Nigeria and East Africa.
CVE Messaging Hub: Alongside the creation of a youth-led alternative messaging hub is capacity development for existing media partners and identification of a cadre of credible young leaders and influencers from priority areas throughout the Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao (ARMM). These young messengers will be supported to provide powerful alternative narratives to prevent and overwhelm the influence of VEOs – both online and offline.
These aims will be reached through various project activities, including formative research to outline and map the recruitment, radicalization, conflict context, and the identification of VE influencers and the methods; Stakeholder workshops; Tech Camps & Hackathons; Mentorship for Peace Promotion Fellows; Community outreach events; Production and broadcast of radio programs on youth radicalization and empowerment, positive messaging, and behavior change; Training and engagement of community reporters; and Listening Discussion and Action Groups (LDAGs).
Engaging University Influencers: Through the engagement of university students, staff members, and government stakeholders, this program aims to illuminate on-campus recruitment efforts of armed groups and increase cross-sectoral collaboration on P/CVE efforts. Activities include VE awareness training and mentoring to university youth, community engagement activities, Tech Camps, and a radio series on issues identified in the formative research.
